Iceland Airwaves Podcasting Workshop

With a veteran music journalist, radio instructor and Iceland enthusiast as a guide and teacher, workshop course attendees will learn podcast and blogging basics before traveling to Reykjavík to attend Iceland Airwaves Music Festival where they will blog about their experiences, gather audio and produce a final podcast segment. The workshop meets Mondays 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., 9/23-11/25, with a week in Reykjavík, Iceland (Travel dates: 11/2 - 11/10)

Iceland Airwaves Podcasting Workshop Course Description: Come chase the Northern Lights, see the Icelandic countryside, rock out to great music at Iceland Airwaves and experience the culture all while learning how to effectively develop a podcast segment and blog in a small workshop setting. With a veteran music journalist, radio instructor and Iceland enthusiast as a guide and teacher, workshop course attendees will learn podcast and blogging basics before traveling to Reykjavík to attend Iceland Airwaves Music Festival where they will blog about their experiences, gather audio and produce a final podcast segment.

 

Learning Objectives:

1.     Learn how to gather high quality audio in a live setting to produce stories

2.     Conduct research, prep and develop questions for interviews

3.     Develop story angles

4.     Craft, script and VO interview-based stories for podcasts

5.     Write and/or produce and voice audio segments/blogs for web

6.     Learn how to use sound to create setting/mood, record interviews, other audio elements to produce an engaging podcast segment

The workshop meets Mondays 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., 9/23-11/25, with a week in Reykjavík, Iceland (Travel dates: 11/2 - 11/10)

Personal laptop
Passport valid through at least June 2020
European adapter plug
Meals outside of breakfasts and group dinner
Travel insurance not included, but recommended

Course Fee: $3200 per person based on double hotel occupancy (an additional $500 supplement is required for single rooms). A total of 10 spots are available for the personalized Iceland Airwaves workshop course. An 8-person minimum enrollment is required for the Iceland course, otherwise the course may be canceled and refunds will only be issued upon course cancellation. Deadline for initial $800 deposit has been extended to July 15th  and is nonrefundable with 8 or more people confirmed for the course. The remainder of the course fee  – so the course fee, minus the deposit (not including single supplement $500, which would need to be added if required) = $2400 – is due August 15th and will be nonrefundable by August 30th. Course instructor bio:

Althea Legaspi is a full-time freelance music journalist/critic based in Chicago. She is a night editor and writer for RollingStone.com and regularly contributes to Chicago Tribune. Her work has also appeared in USA Today, Spin, Vulture and MTV News, among other outlets. In addition to writing and editing, she serves as the Senior Urban Music Curator for ReverbNation’s CONNECT program, an artist incubation initiative.

In the radio realm, she has produced and reported on-air stories for NPR-affiliate WBEZ, which have aired on “Eight Forty-Eight,” “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered” and “Worldview," and she served as a producer for the station's "Chicago Amplified." She has also helmed podcasts for Story Week: Festivals of Writers, Law School Podcaster and MBA Podcaster. 

As an adjunct faculty member at Columbia College Chicago, she has taught in the Journalism, Radio, and Business And Entrepreneurship departments. She is the instructor/creator of the radio department's former Covering International Festivals: Iceland class, where students learned to produce cultural and music stories and radio documentary segments culled while covering Iceland Airwaves Music Festival in Reykjavík, Iceland. The documentaries aired on WCRX-FM 88.1 in Chicago.
