2112 launches SyncChicago to support music licensing

2112 and the Center for Creative Entrepreneurship (CCE) announced the launch of SyncChicago, an initiative to grow Chicago’s commercial music licensing industry.

Funded by a Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) CityArts Program grant in support of the Year of Chicago Music, SyncChicago will focus on promotion, advocacy, and education to increase revenues generated by local music providers from sync licensing deals in advertising, television, film, and gaming.

“Chicago’s major advertising agencies spend a conservatively estimated $15 million annually in synchronization licensing of music. That number is significantly higher when factoring in independent agencies and the city’s thriving film, television, and gaming industries,” says Scott Fetters, 2112’s Director.  “A disproportionately low percentage of that revenue is kept in Chicago due to a lack of connectivity between provider and buyer and a lack of understanding of the licensing process from local artists.”

In partnership with Arts Alliance Illinois, DCASE, 2112, and CCE, SyncChicago will address both of those issues. This project will create a one stop shop for Chicago’s music licensing resources.  An online portal will showcase Chicago-based music libraries, custom music houses, and composers.  Existing business attraction strategies will be expanded to draw new businesses to the city.  Mentor sessions, workshops, bootcamps and archived content will help local artists further develop songwriting skills and knowledge of the music industry, empowering our local community with the tools necessary for business success.

“SyncChicago furthers the mission of DCASE and Year of Chicago Music to celebrate Chicago’s unparalleled music industry and support the professional development of the city’s creative community.  We are thrilled to partner on this important initiative,” says DCASE Commissioner, Mark Kelly.

“During a time of unprecedented growth for Chicago’s film and television industry, SyncChicago supports the growth of an untapped source of revenue for local creatives,” says Chicago Film Office Director, Kwame Amoaku.
